Eliana Morales Gil for La Prensa - To date Panama’s Banco Nacional has only been repaid $8.8 million dollars of the $25.7 million dollars in loans granted in 2001 to “modernize” the transportation system in Panama City. The remaining $17 million is being slowly paid by those who received the loans, or is sitting in the form of scrap as buses that have been repossessed by the bank. Marisol Jiménez, the Chief of the Transportation Section of the Banco Nacional, reported yesterday to the Communication and Transportation Commission of the National Assembly. She said that from July 2001 to September 2006, of the 586 loans that the bank handed out to modernize the transportation system, only 161 (27.5%) are up to date, and the remaining 72.5% are behind in their payments.

Solo 8.8 millones de dólares ha recuperado el Banco Nacional de Panamá (BNP) del préstamo de 25.7 millones otorgado en 2001 a transportistas capitalinos para la “modernización del transporte”. Los casi 17 millones restantes están en manos de transportistas que pagan poco a poco el préstamo o en chatarras dentro de un corral del banco.
Marisol Jiménez, jefa de la Unidad de Transporte del Banco Nacional, dio ayer un informe de este caso ante la Comisión de Comunicación y Transporte de la Asamblea Nacional.
La funcionaria detalló que desde julio de 2001 hasta septiembre de 2006, de los 586 préstamos que se hicieron, solo 161 (27.5%) están al día, mientras que el restante 72.5% está en mora.
